Shangri La in AIA’s Top Ten Green Projects
Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is included in the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment’s Top Ten Green Projects for 2009.
The project includes 200 acres of cypress/tupelo swamp as well as the historic Shangri La Gardens, providing hands-on conservation learning opportunities for children and adults. fd2s developed a graphic identity for the restoration of the facility, and then designed and documented an environmental graphics program that helps visitors to navigate the site, and identifies facilities such as an outdoor education center, classroom pavilions, and bird viewing blinds.
Our involvement in helping the project to meet its sustainability goals included utilizing materials salvaged from the site for some signage elements, and designing all of the signage components for maximum durability. In addition, we also worked with the signage fabricator to minimize waste during the fabrication and installation process.
In addition to project architect Lake|Flato Architects of San Antonio, fd2s also worked with exhibit specialist Andrew Merriell & Associates to create interpretive displays that educate visitors about features such as the wetland water purification system that is designed to restore water nutrient balance in the property’s Heronry Lake, which is home to as many as 5,000 birds.
